Self Taught MCSE - 2007/08/28 14:39 Hiya folks,

Firstly, Can I congratulate the IT Idiots guys for creating a fantastic show that is both accurate and entertaining, thats a hard mix.

I have been in IT for 6 years now but decided to use the MS Self Paced MCSE material and go through the qualification process without instructor lead courses.

Does anyone have any suggestions and stories about their experience of this?

Cheers,

Stevie A.K.A sallan2000

Re:Self Taught MCSE - 2007/08/29 01:39 I am also in the same boat...I found that the most helpful site so far is itidiots.com
I also have been able to get the practice exams etc and they are very helpful in practicing the type of questions that the exam will cover.

Lastly though nothing beats experience so if you can setup a server or two etc then it will help immensely...maybe the guys at itidiots can give us a network diagram of their setup so that we can replicate it?

Re:Self Taught MCSE - 2007/08/29 14:56 I also use techexams.net which is a helpful forum full of very knowledgable IT professionals.

Other than that, I can only suggest reading and watching as many videos as you can. Drill the information in.

This site has quite a few study guides and practice exams, I have found them to be very helpful.

Re:Self Taught MCSE - 2007/09/22 19:44 I have actually purchased some cbts from cbtnuggets.com and from trainsignal.com. I like those very much.
They have helped me to become a (self paced) MCP myself!

These trainings are going around in the p2p networks as well

Re:Self Taught MCSE - 2007/09/26 17:07 I've been in IT for around 6 years also, since leaving high school I wanted to concentrate on MS qualifications, but found them extremely pricy.. not just for an 18 year old uni student, but also from a companies point of view, forking out endless 400 quids for courses and exams is A LOT of money.

So, anyway, I opted for the self study path, I bought some cramsession books off the net, I forget who by, but their red with yellow writing on the front , called cramsession, or cramsession2

I found them really helpful, additionally, I harnessed the power of virtual machines. Not only does this save you money on buying physical machines and wiring etc etc, you can run a corporate network from ur laptop I recall RIS'ing a virtual machine at one point too.. that was cool!

I haven't done much 'stuff' in the last little while, and would like to get back into both networking and certifications again. this is far from a plug to only do MS stuff, but I found the MCDST stuff a good starting point, then worked up through 70-290 and some others to get to MCSA:messaging. I would like to get to MCSE, but with things changing on the MScert front, I'm not sure what the way to go is!

Anyway, to finish off this essay I think the guys @ ITIdiots are doing a great job of presenting, like Nicky said in one of the early episodes, a sometimes dry and professional topic (MCSE exam content), in a great relaxed and chilled environment, and with random appearances of Dr Shabby, I think this is one of the best podcasts on the net.

Keep up the good work guys!

William in Dundee (yeah. thats in Scotland - we do IT too)

Re:Self Taught MCSE - 2007/09/28 20:42 I use techexams.net all the time, which is a large forum where you can get advice from fellow experts regarding pretty much any matter. They also have technotes and various study material.

I highly recommend that place.

Re:Self Taught MCSE - 2007/09/29 13:23 yes, experience of actually using the systems is key. I know it sounds silly, but there is only so much you can learn from reading and watching. But when you actually go away and dcpromo for yourself, you get that experience.

practice, practice, practice is my other piece of advice. Replicate what the guys are doing here on your own test network, if you don't have one.. make one! It's as simple as that.

Software wise, you can get trials off microsoft.com, these may only be 30/120/180 day trials, but in VM's you can just reinstall

Cheers,
Will
