ADDED: I also have xp pro on my other old pc which doest work because motherboards gone kaput. I can upgrade this home to that pro right?

You should be fine running on XP home. You have got plenty of system resources to run quite a few virtual machines simultaneously.

You probably should look at the VMware product range. VMware workstation will offer you the greatest functionality. Once you have that installed, it is very easy to create virtual machines and virtual networks. A lot of that is covered in the podcasts.

Re:Help with setting up lab - 2008/08/07 05:36 I wouldn't rule out Virtual Server from Microsoft either. I ended up using it because I am runnnig Vista64 and the version of VMware workstation I own wasn't compatible with Vista (5.x). I'm currently running Citrix's VHD test drive for XenApp with it.

I think you'll find that the product features are incredibly similar, down to how they are implemented, and there is native support for the VHD format.

one caveat I would add - if you do use virtual server, make sure to download the VMRCPlus tool. It makes using the product much easier.
