Bootcamp startup issue - 2008/04/28 09:39 When I start my machine using BootCamp, having chosen Windows after holding down the option key, a further (DOS looking) menu appears.

It asks me to choose between two Windows installations. I only ever installed it once, and one of those options doesn't work anyway, it just comes up with an error.

Anyone else have this problem? Is there any way to prevent this menu from appearing, as it adds a significant amount to the boot up time.

Cheers

Re:Bootcamp startup issue - 2008/04/28 16:13 Hi there,

Not quite sure why this has happened, but it sounds like your boot.ini is the cause. You can have a look at it notepad, or control panel --> system --> Advanced under startup and recovery.

Actually, you could just minimise the timeout here, making sure the correct default is selected.

Cheers,

Nicky

Re:Bootcamp startup issue - 2008/04/29 04:53 Well done Nicky, that's sorted it.

Still not sure why that was an option though. It seems that the system thinks I have a dual boot setup going within the Windows partition...maybe I made an error during the Bootcamp/Windows setup phase.

Also, is there a way to tell OSX to reboot into Windows without using the option key at startup, while still retaining OSX as the default operating system? (As I understand it, OSX's BootCamp assistant changes the default.)

Thanks again.

Re:Bootcamp startup issue - 2008/05/17 01:06 Do you mean is there a way to boot into windows without restarting the computer? Kind of like when you are running windows you can select on the bottom to reboot in OS X?

Re:Bootcamp startup issue - 2008/05/23 14:40 Parallels will read a bootcamp install. I don't know whether it will actually run

Re:Bootcamp startup issue - 2008/05/24 23:59 Not that I am aware of...there doesn't really need to be though...I mean I don't have a problem sitting here and holding down the option key. But I can see where it could be useful if you are trying to switch quickly while doing other things for a customer or something. For casual boot camp use I can't imagine a reason why you would need that though. Maybe someone knows a better way. I'll ask the tekzilla over at revision 3.

Re:Bootcamp startup issue - 2008/05/27 17:44 Hi,

I do not have bootcamp installed, so cannot check this; Have you tried going into system preferences, then selecting 'startup disk'? If you select your bootcamp partition, it should reboot and automatically load into XP, not OS X. Also this would not change the defaults, it would only be for that reboot.

If you just want to run your bootcamp machine inside OS X, then VMWare Fusion allows you to do this. As I have said, I am unable to do this myself, but I am told it works very well.

Hope this helps,
Tom
