I'm converting - 2008/06/19 08:28 Well some good & bad news.

bad news my laptop died, good news its the excuse I needed to buy a mac

I've don't have loads to spend so i've been looking at the 2.4 & 2.66Ghz imacs.

Would i be better going for the 2.4 & upgrade ram & HD (if possible) later or going straight for the 2.66??

all views welcome as i'm a newbie with macs

Re:I'm converting - 2008/06/20 00:11 I generally would alway upgrade the RAM myself as you can save a lot of cash this way. When I purchased my Macbook Pro I could have gone for the 2.4 or the 2.2, I went for the 2.2 with a faster hard drive as this is not an easy thing to upgrade later. Also benchmarks are so similar between the two machines it just didn't seem worth it.

I upgraded the memory the next pay day. Not sure how easy the HD upgrade is on the imac but maybe somebody will chip in.....

Cheers,

Nicky

Re:I'm converting - 2008/06/20 02:21 I'd say most people aren't likely to notice much difference with the higher processors, so I'd get the 2.4 and upgrade the RAM and HD as far as budget allows.

Re:I'm converting - 2008/06/20 06:25 I've been thinking about the HD & 250 is more than enough for me, I've got a 1TB my book anyway

I think i'll follow your advise & go for the 2.4 & upgrade the RAM when I can. When I do it will have to be 4Gb

Can't wait to start playing around with it

Can anyone recommend any apps that you see a must have? Nicky I think I remember on one of the shows you saying you use a program that changes your wallpaper for you, I've looked but i can't remember which show.

Cheers

Re:I'm converting - 2008/06/28 14:36 Ozzy,

We all know the old adage, "You can never have too much RAM." However, think about whether you really need 4Gb....

Why do I say this? Well the iMac has two RAM slots, one of which will be occupied by the 1Gb chip you already have. To get 4Gb, you will need two 2Gb chips meaning you bin the RAM that you've already paid for with your iMac.

3Gb of RAM however could be had by simply adding a single 2Gb chip, which is obviously going to be half the cost!!

This is the configuration I have and can tell you that the machine absolutely screams along. I would venture that if you're unsure whether you need 4Gb, then 3Gb will serve you just as well.

If you subsequently find that the machine is slowing down - video editing or huge Logic files maybe, then you can always get the second chip. If not, then this will save you £40 - £50.

Just a thought
Cheers

Re:I'm converting - 2008/06/29 07:52 I would agree with Ginger, I borrowed 2gb from my main machine and put them into my macbook whilst traveling and was able to edit HD and do everything with photoshop on 3gb of ram.
