Keeping 2 macs in Sync - 2008/03/03 23:11 Hi Guys, just wondering as you seem to have a few macs each as do I, could you cover on a show one day how to keep all your files synced up. I have an iMac G5 and a new black macbook (well was new for a whole 2 weeks and apple realeased the new one! grrr!) I'd love to be able to have an easy way of just doing like a weekly sync of itunes, iphoto, documents folder and maybe even imovie files.

Otherwise i guess i may as well sell the imac and get a cinema display for the macbook. Its way faster than the G5!

Any comments would be great!

cheers guys, keep up the good work!

Re:Keeping 2 macs in Sync - 2008/03/21 16:47 I doubt iTunes would be possible because it has DRM limitations and it's essentially a database. All other normal files would be a piece of cake. A slightly geekier solution would be using rsync. I plan to check out rsync/rsyncx for some basic synchronizing of files between notebook and home/server pretty soon. My problem is deciding how much stuff I really want to store on a notebook for syncing.

Although I am not well educated on the subject, .Mac to me seems somewhat expensive and limited. One nice thing I'd like to see is byte-level delta synchronizing, which means large files would only need to update the bytes that had changed in a file if it had been updated/changed, not re-transferring the whole file again. I saw that on Windows Server 2003 R2 (although all the big storage engines and SANs have it) and found it to be a great technology.

If you just Google "Mac file sync", you can see a whole host of articles and solutions on the topic.

Re:Keeping 2 macs in Sync - 2008/03/24 09:54 iTunes would be possible for two macs, as you can register up to 5 computers on the same account and have the music on all.

Re:Keeping 2 macs in Sync - 2008/03/24 15:13 For keeping iTunes in sync check out TuneRanger. A google search will find it for you. Syncs PCs as well as Macs.
