Hyper-V and System Manager Beta - 2008/05/30 22:48 I had the pleasure of testing Hyper-V RTM0 and the System Manager beta on my server. It's been running 3 Virtual machines without issue for near a month now....I also tested the Virtual Machine manager and did a conversion of a VMWare based image of our Web server....it all went so cleanly and runs so well....I think MS might have hit one out of the park this time.....anybody else have some experience in this good, bad or ugly?

Re:Hyper-V and System Manager Beta - 2008/08/07 04:46 I think it's incredibly strong for a first release, especially in the area of free training material available.

I think the one hurdle they need to jump is a true live migration that is comparable to VMware's VMotion. I think think that while they have done an amazing job improving Windows 2008 clustering (the base for Hyper-V high availibility - I think that it will still be viewed a far more difficult that VMware's practically "drag and drop" HA solution

In my opinion - this generation of the Hyper-V product will bring virtualization to the customers that are currenttly kept out of the market by the price of VMware or XenServer, but I don't see it having a huge market with enterprise customers in this release, except in the most hardcore microsoft shops.

I've been reading this gentleman's blog, he seems to post alot of interesting ideas: http://blogs.technet.com/josebda/default.aspx

Re:Hyper-V and System Manager Beta - 2008/08/07 17:27 Jason,

Just in case anyone missed it, as from last week VMWare ESX is now FREE. They must be worried to some degree.

As it is now free perhaps the chaps will do a show on it as a comparison???

Regards,

Re:Hyper-V and System Manager Beta - 2008/08/08 03:49 I heard from someone inside VMware that the day the Vmware ESX3i free announcement came out was the busiest their website has ever been.

I'd love to see a show on it as well. I downloaded the ISO, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Re:Hyper-V and System Manager Beta - 2008/10/16 16:45 just to say i am finding vmware workstation 6.5 WAY faster and hassle-free compared to hyper-v in a home testlab environment.

not saying hyper-v is a bad product - it obviously isnt - vmware is such a quick install, and setting up the first vm is much, much quicker than hyper-v. i found performance was quicker too.

just my study lab experience - hardly an exhaustive test!
