Remote Access - 2007/01/01 11:01
A suggestion for a future podcast would be to cover how to remotely access a PC, not only yours but also friends and family and which are the easiest/cheapest and best ways to do so.
I regularly get asked to provide support for family members and rather than talking them through something blind it would be nice to see or be able to take charge of their desktop. The main problem with this is getting it setup in the first place as you have to send instructions for what they need to do and, although I've only looked briefly at Remote Desktop, it looked a little baffling.
Cheers

Re:Remote Access - 2007/01/02 14:01
There is several ways of doing remote access help.
The first few are built into windows xp.
There is remote assistance, in which the owner of the machine can see you controlling their pc and what you do to it. This can be setup as easily as by email, or even the msn network can do it, with Windows Live Messenger (formally: msn messenger).
This has always been an easy option for me as people normally ask for help within windows live messenger, and from what I've seen, its never required ports opening on routers etc.
The next way which is in windows xp is remote desktop, this however logs the user out of their computer and you in, so they can not see what is happening. Windows xp home has remote desktop built in, but a viewer only, which xp pro has, but the server machine which you are logging into requires xp pro.
This does require router ports to be open.
Next, is VNC, such as RealVNC (can be downloaded from here.
There is a free option and a paid option available, and it works with windows, unix and macs.
Again, this does require router (if there is a router) ports to be opened for you as a viewer to view the persons machine. And also, they are able to see what you are doing to their machine like remote assistance. This means they can watch what you do and do it again next time if needs be.
Don't forget, with all this, you need to know the persons IP address to connect to (aswell as sometimes the port). So something simple such as no-ip.com or dnydns.com will allow you to go to a url for that persons machine instead of remembering all those numbers.
I hope this information can be helpful until there is an episode released (if any... I've only just found this podcast) on this subject.

Re:Remote Access - 2007/01/02 16:03
No worries, in true geek style, I like to help. I thought about doing a video cast (vidcast, video podcast what ever you would like to call it) for over a good year and a half now, but being only 17 now, and 15 back then, with my little jvc camera, and the prices for cameras in the UK being expensive, I never did.
But hey, I'm even geekier now, with, well less money and can enjoy the internet with all the vidcasts out there (I found yours through digg ^_^).
If anyone would like a hand with remote access at all, then I would be glad to help, I do use it a lot for helping friends and whilst at work it means I can login to home and see whats happening on my home machine.

Cheers, PJ, I was aware of most of the options you list and have previously discarded them as too complicated (I sent one of my friend step-by-step instructions for how to take a screenshot using Print Screen and he still managed to fail!).
I didn't realise you could do it through MSN Messenger though, worth knowing (I don't using IM software at all).
BTW, you don't know someone called Duncan do you by any chance? Probably not, you're too young for that reference methinks.

I may be to young, but I heard the PJ and Duncan thing when I started using PJ as my nick name about pfft, 5-6 years ago I think, a long time ago
And yes, msn messeneger allows you to easily, if you both have the client open, and are online, and have each other as a contact, open up a conversation, then the one who requires help can go to Actions -> Request Remote Assistance (at least I'm sure that is how its done).
Another way I think is to open remote assistance up and you can from the program setup a request for help via outlook express, in which in emails the person with a url to click on etc, but I have only tried this once to take control of my mates pc whilst he was out of the room, and I didn't get the email for three days...

A couple of other applications I found recently via Lifehacker:
LogMeIn
Crossloop
Both free and, apparently, easy to use (about to give Crossloop a try on a friend to save me heading round there).

OK, I tried crossloop, but that didn't work (the guy the other end never got asked to allow me on, possible the firewall blocked me, but the software says that shouldn't happen).
In the end used iremotepc - easy to install, a bit slow, and I had some problems with mouse clicks on some properties boxes for items on the taskbar, but otherwise worked OK.
