Changing a hosted DNS - 2007/01/30 16:06 I've watched the episodes on DNS and many others, and they're great! One thing I'm wondering is what if you previously owned a package (like at UK2.net I suppose) that took care of hosting and DNS for your website? I've had one of these forever and I've never wanted to mess with the DNS. Now I'm thinking I'd like to do my own hosting but keep my domain name.. do I own it and can I control it or does my service provider own it? How can I change the record to reflect my own server rather than one of the provider's servers?

Thanks

Re:Changing a hosted DNS - 2007/01/30 18:26 Good question.

Assuming you purchased the domain from say uk2.net then you can log into your account and point change the name servers to your new hosting provider.

eg ns1.mynewhost.com

This will only be valif though if your new hosting company are aware of the domain you are going to point at them, they will then essentially pass that through to your hosting environment.

If you bough the domain as part of some free service then it will be owned by them.

So essentially buy a hosting package, tell them your domain eg itidiots.com, log into whereever you purchased the domain from and point to the allocated name servers your new host provides.

Now if you want to point to your server then you might be best leaving that with say uk2.net and setting up a redirection to your server based on a static IP address.

Unless this is hobby stuff I would advise against it and keep it on a system that is managed and patched regularly, plus it keeps the threat of hacking off your physical box.

Nick.
