Hardware Question - 2007/02/15 17:30 First of all can I just say how brilliantly original your video casts are? They are now my number one podcast on things tech and with the content comes some very funny moments. Love it.

Anyway, is there any chance you could let us know what kind of specification Mac hardware you run your configurations on? I currently use a MacBook Pro and Parallels and within that have a Server 2003 AD domain and XP Pro client. The server runs Exchange 2003 and some other stuff. I have 2GB of RAM in the notebook, but would really like to buy a Mac Mini or even better a Mac Pro so that I can run the VMs constantly.

Look forward to your insight

Cheers,

Tac

Re:Hardware Question - 2007/02/15 22:47 Hi there Tac,

To be honest, although we run the show from macs, we use bootcamp to boot it into Windows XP and then run VMWare Workstation under that. The mac mini is a dual core 1.83 with 2GB of ram, all the VMs are run from an external 500GB MyBook (Firewire). For the podcast we just boot the mini into XP and fire up the VMs. For the latest podcasts, from Nicks place in Ashford, we use his iMac which I think is a dual core 2Ghz with 2GB of RAM, it is in Ashford which I am sure has a negative impact on its performance, just like it does with its owner, ask his wife

For the client machine we use my 2Ghz macbook 2GB running Windows XP under parallels, it does run the screen capture software which can get pretty intensive hence the reason to run only one VM, also when the macbook gets overworked the fan kicks in and plays havoc with the microphone.

I do like parallels but I am pretty sure that VMWare runs the VMs faster and has more configuration options like snapshot, which I find invaluable. I am hoping that once VMWare fusion is released for the mac, we can ditch XP/Bootcamp/VMware Workstation for a cleaner solution.

I have just finished trialing Softgrid this week on my mac mini which requires 2 servers and 2 clients which all ran in VMWare surprisingly well. The VMs are configured as follows.
Server 1 - DC/TS 384MB
Server 2 - SQL/Softricity 512MB
Sequencer client (XP) - 512MB
Standard client (XP - 384MB
Just thought I would mention that before you splash out on a macbook pro!

Thanks for you feedback, and I hope you find the above useful.

Cheers,

Nicky

Re:Hardware Question - 2007/02/17 08:47 Thanks for that.

I had heard you both mention VMWare in various episodes, but thought it would be good to get a heads up. Softgrid sounds cool- might look that one up. Parallels does, as far as I know, lack the snapshot feature which is extremely nice. What I do is clone the VM before working on it, but of course that can present all kinds of issues if you aren't careful. I think I will give VMWare on Bootcamp a trial and see how it compares to my Parallels setup.

Thanks for taking time out to reply!

Keep up the good work,

Tac
