Its a good question really and one that doesn't really have a definitive answer. It depends on a number of things for example the size of the organisation and who is actually resposible for maintaining the scripts.
I do think, however it is a good idea to minimise on GPOs processed by the client so a separate GPO for drive maps, one of printer etc would seem a little over the top.
I recently have designed a logon script solution for two companys both of similar size around 1,500 users. One had one central logon script because one person took ownership of the script so it made sense to centralise it, this runs quickly as there is no repetitive functions in use. The other was geographically administered so there was a central logon script for a common users share, printer, and virus database check and regional ones for localised resource mapping.
So you can see iy all depends really. How big is your organisation?
