Fun stories(and horror ones) - 2007/07/30 23:25 A couple years ago I went to take my A+, which I had spent some time studying for. I scheduled to take them both on the same day, back-to-back. I didn't spend nearly enough time however, as I passed both on the passing mark. I think I got 515/515 for Core and 505/505 for OS.

I took a job in early 2006 working in Orlando for a small business which provided tech support(PC/laptop repair), malware-removal, data-recovery, etc...and I was pretty much stuck by myself in this office answering phones and working on machines while my boss was out in the field. I have so many stories, I'll only post a couple experiences I had.

Once I had a japanese couple come in with a laptop that I was repaired, but I had never heard of the manufacturer before and the keyboard was hiragana/katakana. @_@

Another time this russian lady came in with a computer that was filled with nasty malware, and I got rid of it all and returned it to her. She came back 6 months later and complained that the malware came back and that she wants her money returned. @_@

The strangest story I ever had, was one where I received a call from an investigator. He said that his client has some data she needs recovered ASAP and that he wants to send her down to our shop. I was confused, but told him to send her down. Apparently the women's husband was guilty of some crime and they wanted to know what he did on the machine. I told them they would break the chain of custody by allowing a stranger such as myself work on it, but they didn't seem concerned. I recovered a lot of sensitive data...from cookies to web history, to pictures and documents. I also printed a number of suspicious pictures for her to use. I put in the invoice that I would not be responsible for the data.

Several months later I received a Sapena, demanding that I show up for court or I would be arrested and held in contempt. >_<;
I finally agreed to go, so they again asked me to print a number of images that I had recovered. They were images taken by the husband of his former workplaces...which happened to be the airforce, nasa, etc. Some really interesting pictures of new aircrafts and places in the facility.

They asked that I sit in the hall until called, so I waited for about 2-3 hours and then someone came out and told me that the court had adjourned due to the fact that the women's husband fled the country. <_<

Lastly, the worst story was about this attorney who brought her laptop in because the hard drive was failing. She had contacted the company and they said she was not under warranty and nothing could be done. We performed data recovery and gave her the data she wanted, but decided not to charge her our usual $150 fee since she was already going to be paying alot to replace the hard drive. We figured we'd make our money that way. I'm a nice guy, after all.

I got her permission to order the harddrive(overnight, since she needed it for work ASAP) and the next day before it was to come in, she walked in and asked that she be allowed to pickup the laptop. Apparently she talked to the manufacturer again and they are offering to replace it for free and recover any data she wants. The hell?

After talking to my manager who was quite irritated at this point, he decided to eat the cost of the hard drive we ordered and charge her only for the work we've done so far which was $65. At this, she was then infuriated for some reason and complained about scratches on the laptop and stomped out. Over the weekend she called us 5-6 times threatening to report us to the credit bureau,etc if we did not refund her money. She wanted us to work for free? We were incredibly lenient.

Re:Fun stories(and horror ones) - 2007/07/31 00:09 I currently work on a helpdesk for a company that supports REtail chains and their respective suppliers. We had one client that called to say that we had charged him $60 for one month support. he was furious because he had cancelled his contract with us 5yr prior. He threatened court and anything else that might scare us into returning his $60. He also said that it was our fault that his accounting system had automatically paid us his money. When we looked into his file we noted that he had never actually cancelled his contract, we had just stopped charging him $60 per month for the last 5 years. We pointed this out to him, offered to refund his $60 but told him that we would be required to charge him $60 per month for 5 yrs......he happily accepted to forget it all and just go without his precious $60....
