Apparently this is a know bug and the following work around can be used if you want to remove items.

Download PListEditPro from the apple web site at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/development_tools/plisteditpro.html. Run it and open the loginwindow.plist file in the affected users library/preferences directory. Click Operations | Change Format and select XML - this will allow you to see and edit the contents in a readable format.

Find the <dict> line just above the item you want to remove and select it with all the contents down to the line <dict>. Delete this selection and save the file.

Next time the user logs on all should be OK.

Reports say that this issue has still not been fixed in 10.5.3 which is currently in beta. Hopefully Apple will sort it out soon though.
