I do not have bootcamp installed, so cannot check this; Have you tried going into system preferences, then selecting 'startup disk'? If you select your bootcamp partition, it should reboot and automatically load into XP, not OS X. Also this would not change the defaults, it would only be for that reboot.

If you just want to run your bootcamp machine inside OS X, then VMWare Fusion allows you to do this. As I have said, I am unable to do this myself, but I am told it works very well.
