Episode 73: SAN Essentials Part I
Thursday, December 24, 2009 at 10:32PM Ever wondered what all this SAN stuff is about? I know I was, I mean what was wrong with just putting disks in the server, eh? Well in this initial episode we introduce some different SAN technologies namely iSCSI, Fibre channel and a little bit on SAS. All theory this one but on the next one will will be doing some cool demonstrations. Stand by…

you should talk about your experiences of SAN management solutions, pooling etc i know from experience that this sucks your pockets dry and makes you head explode. Also that there isn't really a lot of information out there.
@gone. A thanks wouldn't have gone amiss! Thank you - I found it very useful, having come to work in an environment with a large SAN and a large dependency on it. I do agree with gone however; it'd be good to see some commentry on some of the SAN solutions out there, especially from such an experienced user. Any technical information presented in this way is valuable because as he said, there seems to little "accessible" content out there.
Thanks for the podcast. So regarding the Openfiler and the clustering episode. Is it not worth me trying to set that up to test then? I've been going through that episode and got it all setup but can't get openfiler to join the domain so got stuck.

If you want to test iSCSI you don't need Domain Authentication , it was only set-up i presume for SMB/CIF where you need Authentication and file permissions at the file level. If you need Authentication in iSCSI with openfiller then you use the provided password boxes and set-up two way CHAP Authentication this was something that wasn't covered but would be happy to make a tutorial on.
@Robin yes you absolutely right i forgot to give credit where due , it was a good and informative video
