What do you think of this? Is there a catch? Trial software with no time limits to them? Is it worth it? All for roughly £160 for one year with this discount.

Invaluable in my opinion. You get so much, betas, access to the product on the day of release. I don't think you will regret it.

Can I still get Server 2008 32bit on it? I have an evaluation copy which I'm using in VMWare workstation 7. For messing about etc. But as have no legit key for it, it will expire. Reason I have to currently use the 32bit version is the machine it's going to be running on, can't run VM's in 64bit mode as the CPU ain't compatible :(

So can you really install it on several VM's and it will never expire? I assume they trust you won't use it for your small business etc? Or do they check them?

February 25, 2010 | Registered Commenterjoey pesci

Win 2008 32bit is still on there, in fact all the old ones are, including DOS 6 and Windows 3.1. Yeah you can really install on several VMs although I think there may be a limit of 10 activations, not sure, I think I have done more than that however.

February 25, 2010 | Registered CommenterNicky Curtis

I have bee a MSDN level 3, action pack and technet subscriber (not all at the same time .. lol ), They are brilliant.
I am currently like nicky a technet plus subscriber and i cant do with out it. if have to play around and experiment go for it!
obviously if you lapse you cant continue to use the software,

"I assume they trust you won't use it for your small business etc"

no, its for evaluation and testing only. However, you can with the action pack if the company is IT related i believe.

"think there may be a limit of 10 activations"

that is correct

"stall it on several VM's"

depends how many keys your allowed, its different for different packages for example windows 7 ultimate you only get one key if i recall, pro you get more

February 25, 2010 | Registered CommenterSupernova

there is a VLK version of technet , however, i dont know how you can subscript to it.

I took the plunge. Hopefully I haven't just pissed away £200 (stupid fing VAT was charged at Irish VAT price which was 21% putting it up by £30)

Upset as reading some forums people were claiming you could get 10 keys per bit of software. However downloading server 2008 now and you're only allowed 1 key.

Now this should force me to do some exams really otherwise I've just blown £200 to buy a key for just a bit of messing about at home.

February 25, 2010 | Registered Commenterjoey pesci

@joey

But the Server 2008 keys arnt retail keys like the 2003 its a "MultipleActivation" key this allows it to be installed on multiple machines. Although currently there isnt a way to monitor them as of yet.

Technet FAQ

"MAK This volume license key (MAK) allows multiple activations.** "

"** IMPORTANT - If you use products that require activation, many allow you to go 30 days without activating. If you re-image your computers more frequently than every 30 days, you may want to consider NOT activating them in these cases - if you have that option based on the product you are installing."

"subscription can have one or more activations per product key. Multiple Activation Keys for older products typically are 10 activation keys"

"As subscribers often have legitimate needs to install and reinstall software more often, we are working to increase activations available for keys, or to enable issuance of additional keys"

"you can request additional keys by contacting your local Customer Service Center "

Will need to give the BASTEWARDS! know as BT a ring as I think they are now capping my connection because of the 30gb+ that I've downloaded from Technet in the past few days.

Was getting about 7.5mb (although the connection is 20mb so that is a bit crap) but now only get about 1mb from Technet.

March 6, 2010 | Registered Commenterjoey pesci

WTF.. What are you doing!!!! downloading the whole site?

March 7, 2010 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Eventually, yes :)

I'm a software hoarder :) as I always think "Maybe I'll need that some day" :)

March 7, 2010 | Registered Commenterjoey pesci

Fair Enough. I find that downloading in moderation helps. Here, I have to leave something 700MB running for about 12 hours and anything larger takes longer.

Believe me, it annoys me a lot! But aside from that, in the UK I download a lot of Linux Distros and they only take about 30 minutes (which feels like super speed for me). They (tiscali, now Talk Talk so hopefully something good should come out of it) don't cap it at all, just I live in the countryside and the max speed is 8MB/s, but I get from 512k - 2MB/s on average.

March 7, 2010 | Registered CommenterJamie

?

TalkTalk are shit, they are renowned for being shit and they cap.

March 7, 2010 | Registered Commenterjoey pesci

TalkTalk go ahead sign you up even though you tell their cold callers your not interested!!! b*#!!

March 7, 2010 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Oh, so it will get capped then? Also, they put the prices up.

March 8, 2010 | Registered CommenterJamie

Tiscali also used to be a MLM i think that says a lot!

March 8, 2010 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Tiscali wern't bad for me, they didn't cap the limit, they were a bit slow (but I live in the countryside so what do you expect), I was using them for dial up before broadband.

Still, any good ISPs out there in the UK?

But how does Chatroulette run???

March 10, 2010 | Registered CommenterMark H

"But how does Chatroulette run???"

Why is it roulette? is because you might end up talking to a pervert or pedo?

March 10, 2010 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Anyway, moving away from pedos...

Does Technet offer 90 day trials of the old Microsoft products (e.g. 2000, NT4, soon 2003)

for free?

March 11, 2010 | Registered CommenterJamie

Jamie

Technet Plus is a subscription service for IT professionals. Its £260 the first year and £160 there after.
Yes all the older software is there (msdos/3.1 to 2008 r2) and are full versions. Its not just about software you get betas, training, lots of information, events and support.

2000, NT4 trials are no longer available Microsoft doesn't issue trial keys anymore. You can still get 2003 trials check Microsoft downloads also comes with mspress books

March 11, 2010 | Registered CommenterSupernova

"I'm a software hoarder :) as I always think "Maybe I'll need that some day" :)"

smells fishy!!!!!! You know they have blocked keys from people that abuse the system?

and they are implementing new systems for MAKs.

if you doing what i think your doing i hope you get your comeuppance, its not as if they haven't got all your details on record.

March 11, 2010 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Quite bluntly, fuck off. Don't accuse me of doing something I'm not (selling the keys).

Patronising cock.

March 11, 2010 | Registered Commenterjoey pesci

Ooh... calm down there...

I think what Supernova was trying to say was that if you go on a mad download spree and download everything they have, you are eating up bandwidth for others, microsoft has to pay for the bandwidth on the servers and if you then hoard the keys and ISOs way after your subscription runs out and continue to use them, they will most likely block the keys.

But then again, you can easilly find keys out there or they might do what they do with Windows 7 90 day trial and integrate the keys with the download.
