ITidiots open forum > Microsoft warns users off 64-bit Office 2010

Microsoft is advising its customers to install the 32-bit, rather than the 64-bit, version of Office 2010

The advice is tucked away in an FAQ about the Office 2010 Tech Guarantee programme, : -

"We strongly recommend most users install 32-bit version of Office 2010 on both 32 and 64-bit operating systems because currently many common add-ins for Office will not function in the 64-bit edition,"

Playing it safe.... No real superise.

it is probably because they have never had a 64bit office before, and I'm guessing (like previous versions) the 32bits are built on (reasonably) solid foundations, the 64bits will most likely have bugs in them or could possibly just be poorly written.

Its because of compatibility with common add-ins.

Its just like 64bit windows and drivers ... really

... Microsoft has to let the 64bit Office market mature before becoming mainstream.

That's why I'm hanging back and sticking to my 32bit Vista laptop for a little bit longer and then I'll put Windows 7 on in the Summer when it's had nearly a year to mature. I'll go 64bit as my laptop is compatible and I might upgrade the memory from 4GB to something else... (8GB?)

And possibly stick a 2nd hard drive in it (there is another empty drive bay).
