ITidiots open forum > What do you use it for? iPhone/iPad/iTouch

As you may know, I hate Apple and hate their devices. I now have a right to say this as I've got the iTouch and had it for about a year. Still hate it. It's jailbroken yet still hate it. It just feels so limited. Not true multi-tasking (and yes there is a need for it). I like to listen to iPlayer radio casts on it and would like to also surf the net at the same time. Can't be done. The e-mail client is shit. I've tried god knows how long to get it to connect to my pop3/imap e-mails but it refuses to. Keeps telling me the Incoming mail server and Outgoing are wrong. NO THEY FING AREN'T, it works fine on the E71, so why not the iTouch.

So :) my question is to Nicky. Being a fan of it, what do you actually use it for? I'm asking you as being an IT Engineer myself, I'd like to get a technical consultants reason for using it.

LogMeIn is a joke because it requires a fee, on the PC its free.

That's why I'm going to go Droid next. I think it is a nice open platform, for example: The Grooveshark "app" (I hate that word) is only available on Android, Blackberry, but (surprise surprise) only on Jailbroken iPhones... hmm...

Hi there,

Well I take all your points onboard about the iPod Touch, but the iPad really is a different beast, not for everyone but I think it does have its uses. I don't think I can justify the purchase of it for work though, it is more of a lifestyle device, which is well, so convenient to pick up and use.

All of the things I use it for can be done with other devices, it is just the convenience of the device that I like (and that is so hard to admit!). As I said this is not a justification for the iPad but some of the things I use mine for

At Work:
Document viewer - contains ebooks, white papers, installation guides, training manuals, slides. Sounds trivial but I find this so useful, just the convenience of instant on and straight into it. II also find following guides on the ipad far easier then screen reading, I have a few issues with eyesight but the iPad contrast levels are superb unlike my Lenovo.
Logmein, RDP (Support TS Gateway) and VNC again the ipad is on the coffee table, I can pick up and just get there....
Exchange Email, Contacts and Calendaring I find to be superb
easily could live without it though....

At Home
Loads, it is a toy. web browsing, email (I do like the client!), eBooks. document viewing, Music tabs, games

It is a great device for accessing content put not so good for creating it. I will always want a proper keyboard and mouse for diagrams and documentation. It is not really an IT professional's tool, well I don't think so, but there are a few things which could help.

Thanks. All valid points. I just find, for what it is, it's over priced. I understand the instant on, that I give you is very useful, however this is only because its in a sort of standby mode. Using power all the time. If Windows 7 could develop this, then it would be great.

How about streaming? Having to re-encode everything. I have all my legal movies ripped and on the NAS drive. I can stream them just fine to the laptop. Have to re-encode them to get them on the iTouch. Tried once, couldn't be bothered again.

Games, most are pointless, like the apps. Apple constantly boast how many apps their store has. But the likes of the fart cushion, the strobe, beer can, x-ray etc are all totally, totally pointless. Only game I've liked is poker and Harbour Master and Flight Control, both what Nicky and Nick recommended. The trouble is the controls on some games, you're finger just gets in the way.

Only use the iTouch gets now is using it to watch iPlayer stuff while on the bog. And the YouTube app, but that appears to not want to show half of the subscribed vids I'm subbed too.

Limited. That's what I hate. The PC is just so open and why I'll always prefer it over an Apple device.
