We're funding NHS associate's home software!

No Jamie you dont pay tax or stamp duties your still at school :-)
However, I do. I would support it only for two reasons -
1. doctors and nurse - i would be happy for them
2. for staff that do a reasonable amount of work at home, which i believe it was originally intended for.
on another note parts of the NHS are registered charities, therefore, could still benefit from the Microsoft donations program.

Hold on-
WHY WON'T THE BLOODY MICROSOFT SUPPORT SCHOOLS AND KIDS??? I know of kids staying behind at school for 3-5 hours because they don't have Microsoft Office or even a computer at home or an up to date version of their products to complete set school work. Now, I also know of schools that bend over backwards to try and keep their outdated OSes going (Windows NT, 95 & 98 in some cases) because they don't have the money to buy new hardware that is supported - mainly in the DT departments where CAD/CAM machines are needed.
Doctors (on their wages) can perfectly afford a home copy of Office. As can Nurses.

Shows what little you know. A doctor, fine, they get paid well and will now spend all the budget they are now in control off, in their mates private practices, essentially privatising the NHS. This system failed before.
Anyway, but you should go work as a Nurse. They work long hours, deal with shit and get paid shit. So no, they can't perfectly afford it.
Only people who make the money in the NHS are the Directors, Chief Execs, SMTs, Doctors, Consultants (Nicky's and Su-Fay's of the world:) as well as medical consultants) and Surgeons. Everyone else gets sharfted. I got screwed for a year on a 1st line wage when I should of been getting a 2nd line engineers wage. Arseholes have never back dated it. Bastards!

Well, I know of kids who live in really rough parts of Blackpool where there is a shooting or stabbing pretty much once a month (sometimes a week). They have no money, if they have a computer it is so old it isn't compatible with the work that they send home. If Microsoft gave kids/students a free licence for one computer of their latest office product and, possibly the latest operating system then I would be happy. All they are selling is binary essentially which basically you can't hold. So, theoretically they charge you pretty steep amounts of money for nothing.
Again, I can understand the NHS, but why stop there? I could also argue that Police, Fire, Rescue, Charities etc... should get free or heavily discounted office products. In fact, why not go open-source with Microsoft? Then they can become a Charity and get their own products at a discount...

>"Doctors (on their wages) can perfectly afford a home copy of Office"
I think that is a fairly stereotypical statement. Not all doctors get paid well, not all doctors work in the private sector, not all doctors end up as GP's, also because of medical school often means that they dont start work until later and probably inherit larger student loans. Also i would say doctors also put up with long hours and have to put up with shite from the general public.
Now you could say so what its their career choice! ... but i think we're a little more mature than that.
Regarding why dont MS do this and that ..... Microsoft don't have to do anything!!! just because they are a successful business doesn't mean that they owe anyone anything. You could say why don't shops give out school uniforms for free :-/ where do you draw the line? and at the end of the day these are businesses, like i said they dont owe anyone anything. You should be grateful that they offer any form of charity.
>If Microsoft gave kids/students a free licence for one computer of their latest office product
There is error in your logic would they own a computer or fast enough computer. Anyway they already have student discounts you can get windows 7 pro for £30 and Office Pro for £49.99 that is still a huge discount.
"In fact, why not go open-source with Microsoft? Then they can become a Charity and get their own products at a discount... "
That doesn't make any sense if Microsoft were opensource you would'nt need charity or discounts you could just download and install there products for nothing. Anyway thats not going to happen its not Microsoft's business model

I can understand perfectly having to pay staff and stuff.
In my opinion, they should shoot Steve Jobs because he likes Apples and let Microsoft charge what they want.
I didn't know you could get discount Microsoft products... maybe that Windows 7 upgrade might come early...

Well, I personally think the man's an idiot...
He will just randomly go "Nope, we're not supporting that" or "Here's this product, now the old ones are obsolete, but hey you'll all wait another few months for drivers so you can print again."
Where as with Microsoft, they say "In a year, we're releasing this product. You can download a Beta version of it from our website".
See, that's the one thing that makes me hate apple. Anyway, wrong thread.
Anyway, I'm going to look into that discount... Again, I don't see Apple helping out people...

Ah, I'm not at a university (yet). So I don't have a .ac.uk e-mail.
Aside, whilst typing this, has anyone seen that Bing advert where the woman is in the Tube and asks a man for directions? I think they should rethink their adverts promoting the "Decision engine"

A. ac.uk is just for university
B. i did state you can order without a ac.uk is you send in your schools letterhead
C. that site also list plenty of other suppliers for students.
.. if you read you'll know that.
And why do you change the subject *all* the time?

I did read the thing. I said, I don't have an e-mail and my school's letterhead uses a .com address. Also, I cba sending in a letterhead.
As for suppliers, I would prefer going direct to Microsoft. I'll just buy the full version from PC World...

The government, the NHS or Microsoft for not just ignoring the cancellation for already purchased copies and allowing said purchases to continue to use their paid for software?
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/nhs/pages/licensing/post_ea_hup.aspx
So if you just brought it a month ago, you've just wasted £8.95 (was about £18 if you wanted the DVD).
Although having said that, people here could argue, why should the tax payer be made to fund NHS staffs home software.
I have two copies sat on my shelf (benefit of them cocking up the spelling of my name in my e-mail address at the NHS) that are now void. Apparently I'd be a dirty thief illegal pirate whore who should go to prison if I now use the software.
Will they blacklist all the keys I wonder?
