ITidiots open forum > Ipad what to you think? is it just a big iphone?

is it just a big iphone or ipod touch? ..... to sum it up yes really

disappointed that this wasn't a fully blown mac book equivalent. Also disappointed that it doesn't have handwriting recognition and stylus option yet these may be around the corner i suppose.

However, this could be a kindle killer

Will never be a kindle killer. Battery life, despite the claim will be shit. It won't be removable and will then die after a year and Apple will want a billion squid to replace it. I don't believe it has multi task ability AGAIN.

But all the foolish Apple fans will love it

If it had a Apple OSX based OS on it and it was an almost fully functioning Mac, but with unique iPod/Video apps (instead of using iTunes/Quicktime) then I would buy one without a second thought. The fact that it is just an oversized iPhone/iPod touch has put me off now...

When the kindle first came out it was around $399 an extra $100 doesn't seem so bad (not to say that the price will drop), however, if the new apple book store is successful who knows, jobs as already got some of the big names to sign up. Like you said Apple fans will love it.

If i could note take with a stylus and have handwriting recognition then i would consider it.
As with apple the battery issue seems to be there new policy , sucks for the consumer.

While you boys are carrying around a hefty laptop everywhere just to check your email and surf the web, I'll choose an iPad. It's purpose is to fill the gap BETWEEN smart phone and laptop, not to replace a laptop.

As for never being a kindle-kinder - are you serious? To take a single example, the iPad can go straight into the educational book sector and clean up. Try looking at diagrams and bar charts on your kindle!

It's like going from black&white to colour tv.

Kindle is dead.

I actually take back it been a kindle killer eink is much easier on the eyes and clearer. As i look more and more into the ipad the less i like it. Handwriting recognition / note taking would have been the killer app in the education arena.

"While you boys are carrying around a hefty laptop everywhere just to check your email and surf the web,"

if i just wanted to check emails or a little browsing i would use a phone i don't carrying anything around that doesn't fit into a pocket as a rule. I certainly don't want to carry my laptop or any another device around when i am travelling its the only break i get from the screen.

To be honest, if it was a couple of inches smaller (say 5/6/7 inches diagonal screen size...) then I would buy it, but for a 9" display, it is a bit too big and I could get a netbook for less with the same size screen and get a whole lot more out of it...

Don't get me wrong, I love the iPods and the iPhone looks good (waiting for next generation...) but I feel that Apple's customer service side and the hardware side is not so good... (insert references to Nicky's macbook(s), iphone here...) and I feel that giving the fact that my HP laptop is still going strong (apart from the .NET problems, but that is for another post... and my Dad got the same laptop as me a week later and he has had no problem and is going to go to Windows 7...) I think that if (and this is a big if) apple decided to offer support for other platforms (non-mac) then they would in fact get:

1.) more customers (windows users will buy it for themselves and dual boot...)
2.) more business customers (as they can upgrade hardware easilly and use their old hardware)
3.) more developers

but also:

1.) more driver hassle...

but they could make it open source...

I'm rambling and should stop...

I don't see how a blindfold helps matters!

Well you can say what you like (or not as the case may be) about the iPad, but one things for sure, if it follows the success of the iPhone it IS going to be the device that changes mobile computing.
I may be an Apple fanboy (not very descriptive of someone who has passed his half century!) but I probably will buy one, just because I can.

My daughter came up with an interesting thought though. She said, If I get the iPad, I can take it to Uni do my coursework save it as a Word doc sync it to mobileme and print it on the wireless printer. I will be able to have all the books I need with me at anytime add comments to the text then print a copy when I need it.

Strange isn't it how young people think outside the box?

My comment regarding "handwriting recognition and stylus option" were for those purposes.
So you can draw simple diagrams, arrows etc in lectures or meetings.

I annotate 100's of books a year using PDFs and speciall software if it could do that then brill, however, i still want the above and feel its an educational feature they should have implemented (indeed it could be around the corner who knows).

Regarding uni. some uni's don't allow you to use such devices, i have even heard of some places banning electronic pens from lectures.

I wont be buying one , infact I wont be buying anything, not until this market matures. I wont a device that fits my needs and not a device that my needs have to fit.

In fact iPhone OS 3.2 SDK beta also used for the iPad does have a undocumented prototype handwriting system, i hope it becomes mainstream soon.

Doesn't do multi-tasking I don't believe, so no two books open at once. No Flash support. An advert had to be pulled with Apple claiming all sorts in the video that weren't true. Like the fact the video captures on the iPad where actually overlays of OS X and people noticed Flash playing, hence they had to pull the whole advert. It's overpriced for what it is (essentially a large iTouch). I'll keep an eye out of the iSlate from Asus. The battery will be changeable, will support flash, will be able to multi-task and will just be better I hope.

Some Uni's in the US actually promote using Apple kit, odd. And to Clint's daughter. You can do that with a tablet laptop, better still it has hand writing recognition. They use them at the NHS for meetings.

"Some Uni's in the US actually promote using Apple kit"

if the uni sells apple equipment, some do it over here in the uk, apple normally hirers students to be reps one of my mates did it. Doesn't pay much but is fun apparently.

Iphone and ipad can support flash its just apple has issue with adobe or vice versa

It will be interesting to see how the iPad fares. I think it's a little large for a PDA....I'm sure Apple Education will sell them off to schools as God's answer to education because they are inexpensive....too bad it doesn't have handwriting recognition which would make them more useful in Elementary Schools; but I'll visit an Apple store when they come out to see what the deal is with them...
