achem... windows live one care, forefront?
oops yeah i forgot those lol shows how popular one care was
yep the free replacement of what once was one care.
It uses some of the client tech from forefront,
but forefront is much bigger and is for upto corporate networks has lot of different services, bells and whistles attached to the forefront product range
I never bothered with Windows Live One Care, it seemed as though it was aimed at the people who just bought a Packard Bell from PC World, they plug it in and think I want messenger on here and they saw one care and thought "I'm clever with computers, I need an anti-virus".
I personally use Norton Internet Security (on my main XP box) and that has come down in price over the years, I've used it since about 1999...
Norton 360 is good but can get annoying and it didn't block a Trojan or some kind of thing like that on my mum's pc where as I get warnings from time to time saying "xyz cookie blocked" or "abc trojan blocked".
If I recall Packard Bell supply a Live One Care trial pre-installed.
I tend to block that sort of thing at the service level rather than the client and the rest is done via user types and permissions. I do this for all platforms.
I do tend to make sure , even on other platforms, as backup. that i dont pass-through something to others. e.g. email forwarding attachments. (other plateforms can still pass on windows malware this way).
Although there are a number of trojans for the mac i tend not to worry, most of them are spread through piracy
Fair point, I still believe that realisically providing you only visit legitimate websites and are always weary about what you download you will be reasonably safe. Anti-virus and firewalls only lul people into a false sense of security. If they download something dodgy, the virus checker isn't gonna help much...
The only reason I use Packard Bell as an example, is because they're cheap and people like My Mum, My Grandma, my aunt ect... have them and they're not exactly fantastic with computers, not shabih level, they know how to update the virus checker and windows but thats about it.
I still believe in self build, my dad still says that the computer that I built with him (the one I'm using now) is still the best and its nearly 4 years old. His self built Vista machine (which has a newer version of the case than mine and a bit more RAM and better graphics and a quad core processor) is still not as good, simply because after being transported from the UK in a suitcase to Saudi, and having a load of software which he never uses on there he just says its messy.
But he won't upgrade himself to windows 7, I will as I would like to install my own operating system and have it setup the way I want it (which to be fair he let me do the second time as long as I registered it to his name and created an account for him).
In fact I've downloaded that security essentials for using in my VMs as AVG Free and Avast are fine, but I want to try out this other one...
Off topic, I'm getting back into Linux again now... I downloaded Fedora 11...

worth a laugh??
now out of beta and free to download

i may try it on a VM, as an experience and in case people ask about it, but have no plans to use it.
Last time MS were in the AV business was DOS 6.22 if i recall
