unwatchable > Episode 18 - How Not To Use Skype

congrats on the certs Nicky

just one question how did you workout the percentages when the max number of points is different for every exam, , number of questions is different, questions are weighted differently and the maximum isn't given?

I don't mean to pick faults here, but it was Episode 19...

The MS exams give you a mark out of 1000 as soon as you finish. As far as I am aware all MS exams are like this.

Indeed, however, the MS Exams give some people more marks out of 1000 than others ;-)

"I don't mean to pick faults here, but it was Episode 19..."

yeah I know the post timed out before i realised my mistake.

@nicky

"The MS exams give you a mark out of 1000 as soon as you finish. As far as I am aware all MS exams are like this."

perhaps its the case all exams are out of 1000 now. I don't know. My last two didn't state 1000.

"Microsoft don't actually publish what the exams are out of but its approximately 1000 points"

October 1, 2009 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Yeah, you are technically correct on the % issue Supernova - While all the MS exams are now scored out of 1000 with a pass mark of 700, this does not necessarily correspond to 70% due to some strange Microsoft grading.

The number of questions per exam still definitely varies with most having around 45 questions these days but, as an example, the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008 exam had 75.

Who cares, you both did good, you both know how to run some install wizards and put UTorrent on 1000 computers at the click of a button. Now stop arguing over who got what and what the pass mark is ect...

@Supernova, the old site let you rename the post at any time... and edit at any time... is there any way of controlling this nickyc?

October 1, 2009 | Registered CommenterJamie

@dave & nicky

no fairplay and good on you both doing 3 in one day, i would'nt attempt to do that. (mainly because i have extra time through special accommodation because of temporary disability that effects my vision, i would have to camp outside over night to do 3 in a row.. no actually normally i would only do one anyway)

I just wonted to point out the confusion with the percentages

@Jamie don't get me started about your comments about stuff been all wizard based, maybe when you get your ECDL we can start to talk!

@Jamie why point a reply to me when you asking Nicky the question? besides this time-out business is the norm in forums these days.

October 1, 2009 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Yer, I hate the time outs... if you post something that you later regret, you can't edit it...

also, I meant to split that sentence up...

but yer, good on them, 3 in one day! I take it if it is 1000 points then you have a lot of questions to answer so you both did good, now can you stop whining about who got more and how to work out the percentage...

October 2, 2009 | Registered CommenterJamie

"I hate the time outs... if you post something that you later regret, you can't edit it..."

Its actually to stop lame internet marketers, at least that's one reason. Used to be the way they got around moderators.

They make legitimate posts , then after a while, when the post is indexed by google and everyone has forgotten about it they go back and change it by adding links etc.

if you leave that open then your forum will end up as a archive of marketing spam and google will propably deindex your site for been a link farm.

October 2, 2009 | Registered CommenterSupernova

ah, well I didn't know that. In fact I think that did use to happen on the old ITIdiots... you occasionally got the odd person posting loads of you tube links...

and then you got the people who would post "a helpful guide" on how to remove DRM... and they would never post in the forums on topics that were what I would call "normal" e.g. not just marketing spam...

I think the old site got hacked and thats why it broke...

I still don't like the fact I have to click "Login" every time I visit though... but then it might be safer

October 2, 2009 | Registered CommenterJamie

its because of people in affiliate marketing and network marketing, people put up the links to get commissions from sales.

they spam the crap out of sites to try and make a buck ..... end in fail

i didnt see any signs of that on the old itidiots forums

"I still don't like the fact I have to click "Login" every time I visit though"

get roboform then :-) or some other plugin

October 2, 2009 | Registered CommenterSupernova

"I still don't like the fact I have to click "Login" every time I visit though"

you might as well set a unique password (not used for anything else) and use the sites remember password option.

when the password is sent over the net it will be encrypted via js, however, will be unencrypted on your disk via a cookie... but you'll be logged in all the time anyway so security wise doesn't make a difference (and the password isn't used for anything else eg online store).

October 2, 2009 | Registered CommenterSupernova

Its not that, I have the "Remember Password" thing ticked, but I still have to click Login each time...

I'm not too bothered about it being stored locally, server side, I am a bit concerned if it is stored in plain text there...

October 2, 2009 | Registered CommenterJamie

"I am a bit concerned if it is stored in plain text there..."

it wont be

oh yes you do have to still click logon, odd

October 6, 2009 | Registered CommenterSupernova

I know... it annoys me a bit...

I've just done a shed-load of IT GCSE corsework type stuff about "Storage Media" and "Input, Output Devices" and "software & hardware" they treat us like idiots. 3 hours??? more like 3 minutes, the writing it up is what takes time...

anyway, off topic as usual. Will we be getting an Unwatchable this week or an ITidiots???

October 6, 2009 | Registered CommenterJamie

Great show. Short and sweet and lots of Mac stuff. Looking forward to how well FCP runs, what with how many times you been told it won't. Nice bit of PC-style hacking there.

I think you're better off spending money on lighting and using an iPhone 3GS, just because you can… then apply some grainy indie filmmaker effect and call it your style.

Is it too much to ask for publishing links used in the discussion? (And don't ask me if I'm at the wrong website. These are competent IT professionals. They're used to documenting everything. It's second nature to them. What do you mean, "When they're being paid by the hour"? It's a matter of personal pride for them. OK, I see where I went wrong, now.)

Nice one.
Thanks for making the time to do it.

Oh, and a 'whatever happened to…' segment on all the other things Nick is doing (racing, model planes, whatever) instead of having fun making a podcast. Please, please, please, please, please.

Cheers

Yep, I second that "whatever happened to..." along with bring back "illegal activity corner" and "nostalgia five minutes"
